Botanical Name: Flower of Lagerstroemia hypoleuca


General Information and Importance

Also known as Pyinma tree flower. The tree is found in the moist deciduous forests with lilac-coloured flowers produced in bunches of pyramidal shape and it is endemic to the islands.

It is declared as the official flower of Andaman and Nicobar Islands possibly because it is quite commonly spotted there and is endemic to the region.

The flowers of Alfalfa form a one-sided cluster. Each cluster consists of about ten to twenty purple flowers of the ordinary leguminous shape.

General Information and Importance

The purplish-blue flower blossoms only once in 12 years which makes it one of the rarest flowers in the world.


Interesting Fact

Known as Neelakurinji in Malayalam and Tamil, it is also found in the shola forests of the Western Ghats of Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The Nilgiri Hills got its name from this particular flower.
