General Information and Religious Significance
In Hindi, it is also called Shiv Kamal or Kailaspati. It is known as Nagalingam or Lingam in Tamil. It is a sacred flower for the Hindus, since the the petals look like a snake surrounding hood creating a resemblance to the Naga, a sacred snake, protecting Shiva Lingam. It is commonly grown near Shiva temples and are offered to him as part of ritual.
Uses
The flowers are used to cure cold, intestinal gas formation and stomach-ache.
Due to its fragrance the flowers are also used for making scents, perfumes and cosmetics.
